Pillar of Pride 2023

Kathy Hennig

Music and community service has been a big part of our next Pillar’s life. They began a relationship with the gay band movement as a clarinetist serving as a Pride Bands Board Member during the early days of our organization starting back in 1982. They joined the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band in 1989 and have served the band in a variety of leadership roles, including President, Vice President, Drum Major, Assistant Conductor, Treasurer, Secretary, and Member-at-Large. They have written grants for the band and enjoy contributing to the business workings of the organization. They have participated in dozens of our conferences and special events. A notable appearance was when they stepped in at the last minute to serve as Drum Major of the Denver St. Patrick’s Day parade during the Spring 1995 conference. This individual is very active in the community, serving on the Richmond Arts and Culture Commission and SHARE, a community food co-op. In 1999 she was a school board candidate in Contra Costa County and served on the State of California textbook review committee, representing the Contra Costa County Office of Education. She holds a Teaching Credential in Music and Psychology, and she is affiliated with Mu Phi Epsilon, a professional Music Sorority, and Tau Beta Sigma, the National Honorary Band Sorority. Since retirement they started growing wine grapes in lush Sonoma County, California and now produces their very own artisanal red wines under the name “Wild Woman Wines.” It is my absolute pleasure to announce the second Pillar of Pride in 2023 to KATHY HENNIG.
