Private: 2020 Conference Scholarships

In keeping with LGBA mission and core values of promoting music, visibility, and pride for all; we are committed to continue providing performance opportunities for band members with limited financial resources to participate in the LGBA Annual Conference.

The 2020 LGBA Annual Conference will be held from July 22–26, in beautiful Portland Oregon.  The conference theme is “Building Bridges,” reflecting not only the 12 physical bridges spanning the Willamette River but also the city which works to build cultural bridges throughout its diverse communities. Join us in Portland as we play, perform, share, learn and collaborate in the mission to create wonderful music together. The LGBA is now accepting Scholarship applications to help defray some of the conference costs for a limited number of applicants.

All LGBA Band Members or LGBA Affiliate Members who have demonstrated a commitment to LGBA and their respective band(s) are eligible to apply for this Scholarship. If selected, the recipient will receive a Scholarship of up to $300. The total amount of Scholarship awarded to each recipient, as well as the total number of scholarships awarded each year is dependent on contributions to the scholarship fund for that year. While all band members are welcomed to apply for this Scholarship, we encourage only those who are truly in need of financial assistance to apply.

Please submit your completed online application, and forward one letter of recommendation from a member of your band’s leadership team or board of directors to scholarships@lgba.org by February 12, 2020. The Scholarship Committee will send weekly reminders as the deadline approaches. By submitting a Scholarship application, you give your consent for LGBA Scholarship Committee to make necessary inquiries to confirm financial hardships, obligations, and information if needed.

On behalf of the LGBA Conference Oversight Committee, the Scholarship Committee will review all completed applications and submit their recommendations to the LGBA Board of Directors for approval. All applicants will be notified of the final determination on or before March 21, 2020.  Arrangements for electronic delivery of the award to the recipients will be made at that time.

Historically, LGBA has used PayPal, an American company operating a worldwide online payments system that supports online money transfers and serves as an alternative to traditional paper methods like checks and money orders.

If you are NOT in need of financial assistance but would like to contribute to the scholarship fund, please consider helping out your fellow bandmates at the donation link on the LGBA website. Indicate in the comments section that the donation is for conference scholarships. You may also donate on the LGBA Facebook page.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at jessie.riggins@lgba.org or the Scholarship Committee at scholarships@lgba.org. All questions and inquiries will be responded promptly.
