It is with great enthusiasm that I submit this nomination for Dan Bassett, Artistic Director of the South Florida Pride Bands. I have had the privilege of knowing and working with Dan in a professional capacity for over 20 years, and I can state without hesitation that he is an exceptional leader, musician, and advocate for inclusive arts communities.

As Artistic Director, Dan demonstrates an extraordinary ability to balance artistic excellence with compassion and vision. He leads with clarity, integrity, and a deep respect for the diverse identities represented within the South Florida Pride Bands. Under his direction, the organization has consistently delivered performances of high musical quality while remaining true to its mission of visibility, inclusion, and community engagement.

Dan possesses a rare combination of technical musicianship and emotional intelligence. His rehearsal leadership is focused, efficient, and inspiring; he challenges musicians to grow while fostering an environment that is welcoming and affirming. Musicians under his direction feel both supported and motivated, which is evident in the ensemble’s cohesion, morale, and artistic outcomes. Under his leadership, South Florida Pride Bands has hosted 4 conferences (2009, 2014, 2019, and 2026) and he is the co-founder of the South Florida Pride Youth Band, which just celebrated its 15 Anniversary in 2026 and has crossed the quarter million dollar mark in scholarships awarded.

Beyond the podium, Dan is a thoughtful collaborator and mentor. He works effectively with board members, volunteers, and community partners, and he understands how to align artistic goals with organizational sustainability. His commitment to education, outreach, and representation makes him not only an outstanding artistic director but also a powerful ambassador for the arts and the LGBTQ+ community. Dan is one of the first Artistic Directors to join the Pride Bands Alliance Presidents Circle, demonstrating his commitment to the pride bands movement in time, talent, and treasure.

Dan Bassett’s professionalism, creativity, and dedication make him an asset to any organization or opportunity he pursues. He will be stepping down as the Artistic Director in July 2026, after serving 20 consecutive years in this role. Being recognized as a Pillar of Pride seems like a perfect way to thank Dan for all he has done for both South Florida Pride Bands and Pride Bands Alliance.
